Somoto deserves time beyond the canyon: a northern city of everyday streets, local food, rosquilla traditions and the practical rhythm of arriving, resting and continuing through Madriz.
Why it may fit
Somoto works naturally as the base for the canyon, but the city also gives you a reason to slow down. Local bakeries and rosquilla workshops, public spaces and the rural character of Madriz can fill the hours around the canyon. If you are coming from Managua, an overnight often makes the northern journey much more comfortable.
Planning notes
If you are coming from Managua, consider giving Somoto an overnight instead of forcing the road, canyon and return into one long day. That leaves daylight for the canyon, time for the city and a more comfortable start toward the next northern destination.
