El Castillo combines a small river settlement, daily life along the water and the historic fortress above the San Juan. Arriving by river is part of the experience, and spending unhurried time here feels very different from Nicaragua’s road-based destinations.

The historic fortress can be visited, but river transport and local services set the pace of the journey. Avoid planning El Castillo like a city stop with minute-by-minute connections; give transfers and the river enough room.
